GUM RECESSION

Gingival recession, also known as gum recession and receding gums, is the exposure of the roots of the teeth caused by a loss of gum tissue, usually as a result of bone loss.

It can be caused by a number of factors, including but not limited to:

  •  Trauma

  • Periodontal Disease

  • Grinding and Clenching

  • Smoking + Dipping Tobacco

  • Aggressive brushing & Improper flossing

  • Hereditary thin, fragile or insufficient gingival tissue (Thin Biotype)

Who is a candidate for Gum Grafting?

In our practice, each patient will have a comprehensive exam to check the health of the gums and measure the pocket depths around your teeth. We evaluate recession around each tooth and depending on the severity of your condition, appropriate treatment is recommended.

Not all recessions require treatment.

The treatment for gum recession depends on the severity of the condition.

Mild cases may be treated with nonsurgical methods and areas are monitored. When there is a risk of further bone and gum loss (attachment loss), treatment will be recommended.

What is an Autogenous Connective Tissue Graft?

This is the Gold Standard to treat root exposure. A minimally invasive technique will be used to harvest the internal lining of the gums, which is used to transplant to the site of deficiency.

What if I am not interested in using my own tissue?

If you are not a candidate to donate your own tissue or have the preference not to, an Allograft is used to treat the areas of recession. Soft Tissue Allografts may come from a donor source but can also be in a collagen matrix form.  The key to successfully using Allograft is earlier intervention, because it relies on the body's own residual cells to populate the graft and grows back the correct type of the gingival tissue.

What is Emdogain treatment?

Emdogain is a mix of enamel matrix proteins that, when applied to a clean tooth root surface, form an extracellular matrix that stimulates cells and processes that are fundamental for Periodontal Regeneration.

BENEFITS:

Induces true regeneration

Improves wound healing

Less pain and inflammation

Minimally Invasive

Thinner applicator for flapless use
